What falls on your roof decides the guard
A gutter packed with big gum leaves, an outlet blocked by twigs and fine grit sitting under an existing screen are three different problems. What is landing on your roof determines which guard works and which one wastes your money.
Large leaves
The easiest case. A quality mesh keeps them out of the gutter entirely and they blow or wash off the top.
Needles and small leaves
Harder, because fine debris can bridge or pass through the wrong aperture. Mesh choice matters much more here.
Fine sediment
Wind-blown grit and broken-down organic matter will get through almost anything. Guard reduces cleaning, it does not end it.
Bird and vermin access
Often the real reason people fit it. Guard closes off the gap along the roof edge that nesting birds use.
Judge it on how it works, not the brand name
Product names tell you very little. What matters is how the screen handles the debris that actually lands on your roof, whether it suits your roof type, how it is fixed, and whether you can still get at the gutter afterwards.

What gutter guard will not fix
Guard manages debris. It does not repair a drainage system that already has faults, and fitting it over an existing problem just hides it.
Wrong falls
If the gutter does not run to the outlet, water still pools. Guard over a bad fall means you now cannot see the water sitting there.
Rusted gutters
Fitting guard to gutters near the end of their life means paying to remove it again shortly afterwards. We would rather sequence it properly.
Undersized outlets
If too little capacity is the cause of your overflow, guard changes nothing. That is a drainage fix, and we will say so.
Roof faults
A leak at a valley or flashing has nothing to do with your gutters. Guard will not touch it.
The install is along the whole eave, not just the gutter
Good installation follows the full roof edge rather than treating the mesh as a strip laid on top. Roof pitch, tile noses or sheet edges, the fascia, the corners and the valley interfaces all affect how it is fixed and whether water still gets in where it should.
The corners and the valley discharge points are where poor installs fail first. If mesh is fitted so that a valley dumps water over the top of it in heavy rain, you have created an overflow problem to solve a leaf problem. We check those before we quote.
Ask how you get at it afterwards
Before you commit to any guard, ask how leaves come off the top of it, how you reach the fine sediment that gets through, how the outlets get checked and whether sections lift out for access.
Anyone promising you will never touch your gutters again is overselling. What good guard genuinely does is turn a twice-yearly clean into an occasional check, which under heavy tree cover is a substantial saving over the years and a lot less time on a ladder.
Check what is included before the mesh goes on
Ask whether clearing the gutters first is included, whether removing an old screen is in the price, and how the corners, valley interfaces and outlet access are handled. Those items are where two gutter guard quotes quietly differ by hundreds of dollars.
Also ask what the mesh is actually made of and what warranty comes with it. Cheap plastic screens are the reason a lot of people think gutter guard does not work.

What does gutter guard cost?

Is it worth it for my place?
If you are surrounded by trees, almost always. If you are in an open street with little overhanging, it matters much less and we will tell you so rather than take the job. Blackbutt and the leafier established suburbs are where it pays fastest.
Will it stop my gutters overflowing?
Only if leaves were the cause. If the overflow is from the fall, the outlet size or a valley concentrating a lot of roof into one run, guard will not help and we will point you at the actual fix instead.
