Metal Roofing Shellharbour
Metal is lighter, usually cheaper than tile on a like-for-like home, and it works on pitches tile cannot. Choosing it well is about pitch, profile and junctions, not the colour chart.

New builds, additions and replacements
Pitch and drainage worked out early, penetrations and flashings coordinated properly.
When metal is the right call
Metal suits a lot of homes, additions and commercial buildings around here, and there are a few situations where it is clearly the better answer rather than just a preference.
Lower pitches
Tiles need a minimum pitch to shed water. Metal works well below that, which makes it the practical choice on many additions and modern designs.
Where weight matters
Metal is far lighter than tile, so it asks less of the structure. On a conversion from tile that is usually an advantage rather than a problem.
Larger roof areas
Commercial buildings and big spans, where long sheet runs and fewer joins make sense both practically and on cost.
Budget-conscious replacement
On a like-for-like home, Colorbond usually comes in below tile. If cost is the driver, this is worth pricing properly.
Five things that matter more than colour
Pitch
Every profile has a minimum pitch. Go below it and water backs up under the laps. This is the constraint that decides everything else.
Profile
Corrugated, trimdek, klip-lok and the rest all behave differently at laps and junctions, and they are not interchangeable on the same roof.
Fixing method
Pierced or concealed fixing changes how the roof handles movement and where its weak points are over time.
Insulation and sarking
Metal moves heat and can form condensation underneath. What goes below the sheets matters for comfort and for keeping the roof space dry.
Drainage
Metal sheds water fast, which means gutters and outlets have to be sized for the volume arriving rather than the roof area on paper.
Colorbond, and what people mean by it
Plenty of people say Colorbond roofing when they mean metal roofing generally. Colorbond is a specific BlueScope product, and there are other coated steel products that are not the same thing even though they look similar on a roof.
It matters because the warranty follows the actual product. If a quote says Colorbond, it should name the product and finish so you know what you are getting and what is guaranteed. We specify exactly what we are installing, and we will tell you plainly if you are comparing our quote against something that is not the same material.
From plans to a finished roof
The clearer the roof geometry and the trade sequence, the more accurate the quote and the fewer surprises on site. For a new build or addition, send the current drawings with the revision date. If selections are still open, say so and we will state the assumptions rather than bury them.
For a replacement, we work from the existing roof: the structure, the geometry, the drainage and how everything currently connects. Either way we want the junctions and penetrations settled on paper before anyone is on the roof, because that is where metal roofs are made or ruined.
Read it as a specification, not a price
When two proposals look alike, read past the total. Check the actual product and finish, the profile, the fixing method, what insulation or sarking is included, and how the flashings, cappings and penetrations are handled.
Then check whether removal and disposal are included, what warranties apply to both the product and the workmanship, and what happens if something unexpected turns up. A quote that is thousands cheaper is usually specifying something different rather than being generous.
What to send us
We install metal roofing on homes and commercial properties across Shellharbour and the surrounding suburbs, within about 20 km. For a new build or addition, roof plans and elevations let us quote properly. For a replacement, tell us what is there now and what is going wrong.
Mention the pitch if you know it, whether the building is single or two storey, and anything on the roof like solar, vents or air conditioning. Ryan Bruce leads the team, we have more than 10 years of roofing experience behind the work, and we are fully licensed and insured.

Metal roofing is usually the lower-cost option of the two on a like-for-like home, and it is lighter on the structure.
Metal roofing questions
Is metal roofing suitable for any pitch?
No. Every profile has a minimum pitch, and going below it lets water back up under the laps. Metal does work on lower pitches than tile, which is often exactly why it gets chosen, but the limit is real and we check it before quoting.
What does a metal roof cost?
A Colorbond roof on most homes runs $15,000 to $30,000, replacing an existing metal roof $15,000 to $35,000, and converting from tile to metal $18,000 to $38,000. Every job is quoted in writing after we have looked.
Is metal cheaper than tile?
Usually, on a like-for-like home, and it is lighter on the structure too. Whether it is the better choice depends on the pitch, the look you want and the building itself rather than price alone.
Is all metal roofing Colorbond?
No, and this is worth knowing. Colorbond is a specific BlueScope product, and other coated steels look similar but are not the same. The warranty follows the actual product, so any quote should name what is being installed.
Is a metal roof noisy in rain?
Less than people expect on a properly built roof with insulation and sarking underneath. What sits below the sheets makes a real difference to both noise and condensation, and it is worth including rather than saving on.
Can I put metal over my existing tiles?
No. The old roof comes off first. Anyone suggesting otherwise is proposing something that will cause you problems with weight, ventilation and drainage.
Will it rust near the coast?
Coastal exposure does affect finish selection, which is why we choose the product for where you actually are rather than defaulting. Keeping the roof rinsed and the gutters clear extends its life considerably.
How long does it last?
A well-installed metal roof lasts decades. Most failures we see are at fixings, laps and flashings rather than the sheets themselves, which is why the junction detailing matters more than the brand of steel.
